“Victimitis” – feeling a victim of some situation or person or any other claim – is one of the most widespread syndromes of our societies. Many people live their whole lives feeling victims of one thing or another – hence never become truly adult, as the first characteristic of an adult is that of assuming full responsibility for everything that enters one’s life. That does not mean one caused it, but that one accepts the full responsibility for one’s response to the situation.
I bless myself in my ability to say YES THANK YOU to every person or situation that enters my life, knowing full well that it contains a treasure for me to discover, a hidden gift of divine Love to make me grow – that ultimately everything is grist for the mill to help me access the true reality behind material appearances.
May I absolutely shun complaint in any form and under any guise, for it is the bed companion of feeling a victim; and may I discover the amazing power of gratitude as the absolute antidote and perfect vaccine to feeling sorry for myself or a victim of circumstances or others.
May I understand that at every moment I have the choice of my attitude, and that infinite Love has endowed me with the ability to respond with intelligence, creativity and love to any circumstance, rather than wax faint in the arms of timidity, doubt or fear.
May I see that at another level of reality, there is a perfect plan for my life, and that at every moment, the universe is conspiring for my total happiness and profound contentment, hence that “trials are proofs of Love’s care” and that ultimately all things will work out for my good.
Accepting the Total Responsibility of My Life
Accepting the total responsibility of everything that happens to us is one of the most fundamental steps any individual can take. It marks the passage from child to adult.
This does not mean one has caused a specific situation, but that one accepts one’s ability to respond with creativity, intelligence and love to every single event in our lives. It is a gateway to great freedom and quiet joy.
I bless myself in my ability to feel the deep empowerment growing from accepting my responsibility for all that enters my life.
I bless myself in my ability to finally say good-by to every single victim attitude:
- complaint which I choose to replace with gratitude
- refusal of all timorous “NOs” which I choose to replace with acceptance and a powerful “YES”
- fear which I learn to replace by trust
I bless myself in accepting the immense inner liberation that comes from being master in my own home rather than letting events and people shuffle around my inner mental furniture.
Above all, I bless myself in my sincere desire and deep yearning to hold on to seeing all others as free, to hold on to the true reality of their grandeur and majesty as children of God rather than the poor stumbling mortals they sometimes appear to be.
Seeing Through the Eyes of Love
At every single moment of our lives, we choose our thoughts, hence our vision of reality. It is in that sense that one can say that we truly do create our reality.
So what if the most productive and helpful way was in seeing all through the eyes of Love?
I bless myself in the supreme freedom we have – to choose how we view life.
I bless myself in my ability, today, to see all through the eyes of Love.
I bless myself in seeing that my neighbor is myself, hence as worthy of love as I am.
When I see someone worn out by life or buried in grief or sadness, may I embrace them with the eyes of love and be for them a reflection of Life’s tender, loving care.
When I see someone torn by resentment or hatred, may my deepest compassion surround them in its warmth as a cloak.
When I see someone struggling with fear, may the eyes of love give me the inspiration to meet their need in the best way available to me at that moment.
When faced with any appearance of lack in any form or guise, may I be graced with the vision that will alleviate that lack and replace it with the peace of true abundance and an abundance of true peace.
A Blessing for a Vision of Our Future World
A dear friend who made many helpful suggestions for this book sent me this blessing she had composed which I am grateful to include, as vision is one of the two or three most needed ingredients to create a new world that works for all.
May we cultivate a vision of a world where love and compassion are stronger than hatred, fear, and self-interest.
May we envision a world where justice is administered impartially and not influenced by politics, race, social and economic status.
May we all work for a world where individuals and nations choose cooperation and sharing over competition and hoarding.
May we learn, individually and collectively, that we are stewards of our planet and its riches, not its abusers.
May we create a world where we all understand that we are one another’s keeper, and that what happens to one individual affects everyone.
May we all learn to listen to, understand, support, and nurture one another.
And in the words of Paramahansa Yogananda, may we know that “the happiness of one’s own heart alone cannot satisfy the soul; one must try to include, as necessary to one’s own happiness, the happiness of others.”
