Welcome... Our InnerSelf welcomes your inner self.
This week, in the US, it is Thanksgiving. While being grateful really needs to be a daily practice, having one day a year that highlights giving thanks can help us center ourselves and take note of everything we have to be grateful for. However, there are times where it may seem nearly impossible to be grateful due to circumstances we find ourselves in. One of our authors this week can help us in that situation with "How You Can Feel Gratitude During Difficult Times".
With much more of the population either aging or being in physical pain, we can also gain insights from "Looking for the Gold in the Ashes of Pain". However, there is more than physical pain that keeps us from living in gratitude. Holding on to resentments, grudges, anger, etc. stands in the way of feeling appreciation. Jane Wyker shares her personal experience in "Reflections on Mom: From Pain to Gratitude and Forgiveness" and Jude Bijou provides us with tools in "An Attitude of Gratitude: Enjoying the Here and Now".
And of course, relationships are always our greatest challenge and provide our greatest life lessons, whether with our partner or others close to us. Joyce and Barry Vissell share in two separate articles, how "To Really Appreciate a Woman..." and how "To Really Appreciate a Man..."
And as our featured authors remind us, gratitude and appreciation are an ongoing process. We have to clear the way of obstacles so that love can shine. This applies to all of our relationships... whether at home, at work, or out in the world grocery shopping, or whatever. We need to constantly "be on the lookout" for those things we have to be grateful for.
This week, we have introduced a new feature on the website, a "push notification" in which you can be apprised as we add new material to the website throughout the week. So you don't need to wait until the newsletter arrives to be inspired, but can get notified via your online browser that a new article is online. The little bell graphic at the bottom right of any InnerSelf page is how you activate this feature. You also inactivate it the same way should you decide, after having tried it, that you'd rather not have this "push-notification" feature. When we send out a notification that a new article is online, a little box opens on your browser and if you click on it, you are taken to the new article. Simple and easy. We hope you'll like it.
And as usual, we bring you numerous additional articles on a variety of topics. Scroll below for the titles and links to all of them.
Wishing you enjoyable insightful reading, and of course a wonder-full, joy-full, loving and thankful week. May you focus on all you have to be grateful for and thus help that expand in your life and in the world.

Looking for the Gold in the Ashes of Pain
Written by Sarah Anne Shockley
When we’re in severe or chronic pain, our normal life is not available to us in the way it used to be. Instead, living in pain feels like being taken out of life. Our normal life recedes to a distance at the same time that the feeling world of pain becomes incredibly close, immediate, and demanding. Pain becomes our experience of life.

Reflections on Mom: From Pain to Gratitude and Forgiveness
Written by Jane Wyker
As I felt the benefits of forgiving my ex-husband Werner, I began to look at other grievances and judgments I was holding. Mom was at the top of my list. Could I find my way to forgive her, too? That would require me to mourn the losses of my childhood and let them go. Holding onto my resentment to Mom kept them in place.

An Attitude of Gratitude: Enjoying the Here and Now
Written by Jude Bijou, M.A., M.F.T.
Being unappreciative in general and focusing on the half empty is a core attitude that Attitude Reconstruction associates with the emotion of anger. These qualities block our ability to experience the emotion of love. With the holidays approaching, it’s time to reverse your old tendency.
