We are living through times of major transformation. We see it around us in the good, the bad, and the ugly. It is obvious that things are changing, and many of us may be wondering whether they are changing in the “wrong” direction. At times, we may feel powerless to influence what is taking place, as if events are happening beyond our reach or control.
Yet even a tiny pebble in a shoe makes a difference to the wearer. And in the same way, our individual actions, thoughts, and attitudes have repercussions that we may not be immediately aware of, because they are part of a greater accumulation of actions and energies.
I was reminded of this not long ago through a simple, unexpected experience. I had done a small favor for the daughter of a man I had only spoken with briefly on the phone. He was actually the builder, 40 years ago, of the house in which I am currently residing.
At the time, there was no expectation of anything in return, only the quiet satisfaction of helping another human being. Months later, I found myself needing assistance and reached out to that same man. He responded generously, offering his time and support without hesitation.
In that moment, I was reminded that what goes around truly does come around. Also known as karma, this simple truth reflects how energy moves and returns. My loving action, taken without expectation, found its way back to me when I least expected it.
In the same way, what is unfolding on the planet is part of a much larger process of cause and effect. The energies humans put out, consciously or unconsciously, have a way of finding their way back over time. And while this process can be uncomfortable at times, it is also how we learn and grow.
The First Step: Clarity
We may also be feeling or experiencing changes within ourselves. And here, in our inner world, we can and need to be decisive about our choices and our direction. This choice is completely in our control. The choices we make will make a huge difference in our inner life and, as a result, in our outer life as well.
Every meaningful change begins with clarity. Just as in any journey that we undertake, we need to be clear about our direction and our desired destination before we can move forward with confidence.
Our destination in this instance is not a physical one. First and foremost, it is a "feeling destination". How do we want to feel? What do we want to experience as a state of being? What will be the energy that resides in our center, in our heart? That is the first thing we need to address. That is the first choice of the many choices we will need to make.
So let’s pause and reflect on that. Do we desire peace, or do we desire stress? Do we desire conflict, or do we desire harmony and cooperation? These choices lay the foundation of our future.
And these are choices that we take daily, but perhaps unconsciously. We may be choosing conflict and stress due to the actions we are taking. Yet, if we choose the feeling first, then our actions will follow in that same path.
While it’s perfectly fine to have goals that are more concrete, whether that’s a new job, a new house, more income, less debt, or improved health, it’s essential that we first lay the foundation of the energy we wish to experience along the way.
We can choose joy.
We can choose peace of mind.
We can choose love, compassion, and collaboration.
Or we can, consciously or not, choose "other".
Conviction: Trusting the Process
Once we are clear about the energy we wish to experience in our future, the next step is to commit to it. And that commitment takes the form of conviction.
Conviction is the willingness to believe and trust that when we make those chosen energies the foundation of our daily actions, things will begin to line up and fall into place, much like a row of well-positioned dominoes.
However, for this to work, we must be convinced, or at least fully willing to accept the validity, of a principle taught to us by Jesus:
“If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”
This teaching blends two powerful qualities: conviction and confidence. We have to do more than simply agree with the idea. We have to be willing, even in the midst of doubt, to trust that this reflects how the universe works, or at least how it can work for us if we are willing to cooperate with it.
And once we begin to accept this law of existence, something shifts within us. We start to develop the confidence to step forward and actively create the life we desire, rather than waiting for circumstances to change on their own.
The Cost of Quiet Resignation
Unfortunately, many people have lived a life of quiet desperation. We may have resigned ourselves to situations that drain us, perhaps remaining in a job that not only fails to bring satisfaction, but that we actively dislike.
There’s a podcast I listen to where every Friday the host starts with a cheerful sing-song: “It’s Friday, it’s Friday, thank God it’s Friday.” Each time I hear it, I feel a twinge of sadness. Why? Because it’s a declaration that the week leading up to Friday was unfulfilling, unjoyful, and did not nourish the heart. Friday is celebrated because the misery of the week is finally over.
In the same way, I take issue with calling Wednesday “hump day.” The phrase implies that the five days from Monday through Friday are a burden, that Wednesday means we’re halfway through the drudgery, and that the goal is simply to survive until the end of the week. Once again, this supports the idea that our work week is boring, tedious, and devoid of joy.
I recently started using the expression: Life’s too short to be miserable. Perhaps the reality of our workweek is that we have neglected to bring joy into it.
Many people, especially in my generation, lived their lives with an eye focused on the future. Many worked at jobs they didn’t like because they paid well, or because they offered good retirement plans, or other material benefits. Some even chose professions, such as teaching, primarily because of the vacation time. Of course, there are many reasons for this, but motivation rooted in finances rather than passion is certainly part of the problem.
The Courage to Live What We Know
This brings us back to our three foundations: clarity, conviction, and courage.
First, we get clear about the energies we want to experience and how we want to feel. Then, as we begin living in alignment with those choices, we develop the conviction that they are leading us in the right direction, toward the life we truly want to live.
And then comes the hardest part: courage.
It takes courage to live our truth. Courage to follow a path that feels right to our heart. Courage to honor what makes our heart sing and to recognize that our worth does not come from external validation, but from within. We are the ones who must believe we are valuable. We are the ones who must stand up for our inspiration, our guidance, and our inner wisdom.
It takes courage to stand by our beliefs when people around us are affirming something very different. It takes courage to remain grounded in our truth when faced with contradiction, doubt, or pressure to conform.
And we do not have to convince anyone else of our beliefs, our hopes, or our dreams, or even our vision of a better future, for ourselves or for the planet. The important part is that we agree with ourselves. That we believe in our vision. That we honor our truth. That we continue choosing joy, love, and the confidence that things are moving in a positive direction.
That, too, takes courage. Especially when others insist on seeing only what is wrong, only what is failing, only what appears to be falling apart.
Our Life Journey Is a Process, Not a Destination
This is not a snap-your-fingers kind of manifestation. Life unfolds as a path we walk, one step at a time. A path that asks us to walk with joy and love in our heart. A path that requires faith that the destination will be worth the journey. And a path that presents us with many forks in the road, each one calling for a conscious choice.
At times, this path may feel long, difficult, or even endless. And that is when we must draw once again on courage, clarity, and conviction.
We need the courage to continue even when we don’t yet see positive results. That is often part of the lesson. Don’t give up. Don’t give up on yourself. Don’t give up on the dream and vision of a better life and a better world.
We must hold on to the clarity of that vision. We must maintain the conviction that it is not only possible, but that it is already unfolding. And we must have the courage to take the actions our heart guides us toward, even when we cannot see how everything connects.
This is the process of life. We are responsible for our part, for our actions and intentions. Then we let go and trust that the appropriate response will come, from we know not who or when. The energy we put forth acts like a magnet, drawing similar energy back to us.
So hold on to your conviction that all will be well, that everything is in the process of positive change, no matter what your eyes, or the media, may suggest. Yes, things may appear chaotic “out there.” But our role is to create the change we wish to see from the ground up, beginning with ourselves.
Don’t give up, even if you don’t yet see results. Some seeds take a long time to sprout. They grow quietly beneath the surface, unseen, but steadily. We simply have to keep watering them, removing the weeds that threaten to smother them, and offering them love and attention.
What we feed grows. So let us be clear about what we are feeding. Let us have the conviction that the seed will grow, even when there is no visible evidence yet. And let us have the courage to continue nurturing it, trusting the process, and taking actions that support the future we envision.
Remember to have the faith of a mustard seed, and in time, you will see the results. The mountain will move. And what you envisioned will become reality. Hold on to your faith in the future. Don't buy into the illusion. It's all a play, and the script is about to change.
Remember we are all part of the scriptwriting team. We may have been on a sabbatical. But we're here now with awareness, clarity, conviction, and courage. Together, we are the shift that is taking place underneath the turbulence that we see around us. Know it! Trust it! Be it!
